Who are we? In 2011, a group of Romeo parents and pastors formed the Romeo Baccalaureate Committee in response to concerns that Romeo High School no longer held a baccalaureate service for its graduating class. Although we are a ministry of Romeo United Methodist Church, the committee has its own members and raises its own funding.
What do we do? The Romeo Baccalaureate Committee, in partnership with the Romeo High School Christian clubs S.T.A.T.I.C. (Students Taking Action Together in Christ) and Fellowship for Christ, privately sponsors the Baccalaureate service for graduating Romeo High School seniors. 2020 will be the tenth year we have sponsored baccalaureate. After the service, a reception is held for seniors and their parents and guests. While everyone enjoys punch, cake, and other desserts and baked goods, a drawing is held for the seniors, where they have a chance to win gifts or gift cards donated by local restaurants and businesses. In 2018, three senior each won one of the grand prizes donated by the Romeo Area Kiwanis and the Romeo Baccalaureate Committee--$250 Visa Gift Cards to help with college/career expenses!
When do we do it? The Baccalaureate service for Romeo High School takes place on the Wednesday before graduation. However, the baccalaureate committee begins meeting in January to ensure that we have plenty of time to plan the best service possible.
Where do we do it? Last year, a wonderful baccalaureate service was held for the Class of 2019 at Romeo High School! We'll keep you posted about the location of the baccalaureate service for the Class of 2020.
Why do we do it? Baccalaureate is a Christian service designed to honor graduating seniors. Because high schools can no longer sponsor baccalaureate, it is up to groups such as the Romeo Baccalaureate Committee, S.T.A.T.I.C., and Fellowship for Christ to privately sponsor this important service so that graduating seniors can come together as a group and receive prayer and a blessing before going out into the world.
How do we do it? First, lots of prayer! Second, lots of help and support. We receive our funding from area churches, businesses, organizations, and individuals. We also receive a lot of donations, including baked goods supplied by senior parents, local orchards, and churches; Bibles for each student; and gifts or gift cards from local businesses to be given away at the drawing. In addition, everyone involved in the service and reception is a volunteer.
